    Welcome Message from David Edman

David EdmanLast month, we ran a quick survey and asked readers how health reform will impact their costs in 2011. The results indicate that concerns about rising healthcare costs remain. Why? Because current health reform legislation focuses on covering more Americans, rather than the unfinished business of controlling healthcare costs. In this month's feature, we show how your company can shift the focus back to effectively lowering healthcare costs, increasing quality, and improving outcomes by aligning incentives among patients, providers, and payers of healthcare.

Aligning Incentives to Reduce Healthcare Costs and Improve Quality

Aligning Incentives to Reduce Healthcare Costs and Improve QualityWhy is our current health insurance system broken? We're over insured. Many people expect that they can get the health services they want, when they want them, and at someone else's expense. This is a recipe for runaway costs, which pretty accurately describes the situation in our country. Employers can take major steps to rectify this situation by aligning incentives among patients, providers, and payers. Read more.

New Under Health Reform: Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs)

New Under Health Reform: Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs)Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are among the most interesting "innovations" introduced by health reform legislation. To accomplish the goal of delivering coordinated and efficient care, ACOs integrate the delivery and financing of healthcare services within a single entity. Will they be effective? Read more.

New Coverage Requirements for Young Adults (up to age 26)

New Coverage Requirements for Young Adults (up to age 26)Beginning in September, employer-sponsored health plans and companies selling individual health insurance policies must offer coverage to subscribers' children up to the age of 26. This coverage must be available regardless of whether a child lives with his or her parents, is married or unmarried, attends college, is a dependent for income-tax purposes, or receives parental financial support. Many insurance companies are accelerating the timetable and making coverage available beginning June 1, 2010. Contact us at info@rmpllc.biz if you have any questions. Read more.

For a time, the prospects for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) under health reform weren't looking very good. A few incentives were taken away in the end, but not too many. On balance, we did fine and the future looks good. Read more.

Health Tip
Fun in the Sun.  Now that it's getting warmer outside, we need to become vigilant about managing our sun exposure. Doctors warn us about using sunscreen year round, but it becomes more important in the spring and summer when we're outside for longer stretches of time. Keep in mind that Vitamin D comes from the sun and is needed to help calcium get absorbed, so 15 minutes of direct sun daily can be healthy. Most of us are actually low in this vitamin. But don't overdo it. Also remember to let your doctor know of any change in moles, and get your skin checked annually for skin cancer. Read more.
