    Welcome Message from David Edman

David EdmanRisk Management Partners, LLC, is on the move. On October 29, 2009, I visited the White House for a discussion on health reform (see Press Release). Also, we warmly welcome 3 new people to our staff in the role of benefits advisors to our clients: Bob McMackin, John McSherry, and Chip Graham.

Regarding health reform, my message this month is that we must LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Our elected officials know that the health insurance system is broken, but they struggle to find a better system for health insurance and delivery of health services. Health reform starts at home, by finding the waste in your insurance purchasing practices and taking corrective actions. Call us (any one of us) and we'll show you how.

Please feel free to contact any one of us on the healthcare issues of the day.

Provider Networks – What You Need to Know at Renewal
By Bob McMackin

Provider Networks - What You Need to Know at RenewalAn insurance carrier's provider network is comprised of hospitals, doctors, and other providers who sign a contract and agree to provide services to the carrier's members, typically at a discount from usual charges. The number and type of providers in the network, and the level of discounts offered, can have a profound impact on your experience with that carrier. When it comes time to renew, we encourage you to ask questions. Read more.

Policy Update: An Analysis of Health Reform Legislation (H.R. 3962)

Policy UpdateThis month we include a fairly detailed critique of the healthcare bill passed by the House of Representatives (H.R. 3962) including:

What's in the bill that should be.
What shouldn't be in the bill, but is.
What isn't in the bill, but should be.

There is much more work to be done to create meaningful health reform and we include some action steps that you can take. Read more.

Health Tip
Water Works for Weight Loss.  Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with 2 quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into 8 (8-ounce) bottles or 4 (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. A recent study showed that people who drank water before meals ate an average of 75 fewer calories at that meal. Calories saved turn into pounds lost, and they can add up quickly.
